TUGA Innovations leads agreement to establish ARVIA SE, a new European entity dedicated to next-generation autonomous urban delivery vehicles

TUGA Innovations (“TUGA”) announces the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ARI Motors Industries SE (“ARI”) and Faction Technologies, Inc. (“Faction”) to create ARVIA SE, a new European Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) focused on developing a fully integrated transatlantic ecosystem for autonomous last-mile delivery solutions.

This agreement marks a decisive step in TUGA’s strategy to introduce a new urban mobility architecture, combining compact vehicles, modular platforms, proven driverless technology and multi-regional deployment.

TUGA Innovations: urban vehicle architecture engineered for the autonomy era

Under the MOU, TUGA will contribute:

• Its narrow-track urban EV platform, “TUGA Deliver”
• Associated IP and patents
• One TUGA Deliver Driverless
• Design and engineering expertise in advanced urban mobility

In addition, ARI will be able to produce TUGA vehicles at its Czech manufacturing facility, creating the first European hub dedicated to autonomous urban delivery vehicles.

Faction Technologies: market-proven autonomous delivery technology

Faction brings a fully operational, commercially validated driverless platform already deployed in the United States, including:

Through the MOU, ARI will be able to:

• Integrate Faction’s sensors, cameras, compute units and software into ARI vehicles
• Collaborate with TUGA to scale next-generation urban vehicles for both the U.S. and EU
• Bring autonomous technology into European series-production vehicles for the first time

ARI’s recent acquisition of Acceleracode SRL, with ~40 software engineers, strengthens the ability to support, integrate and scale the European autonomy ecosystem.

TeleAssist Center Europe: ARI to operate the regional remote-operations hub

Faction already operates a state-of-the-art TeleAssist Center in the United States, where operators support autonomous vehicles in rare edge-case scenarios (typically 1 operator per 10 vehicles).

Under this MOU:

• A TeleAssist Center Europe will be established in the Czech Republic
• ARI will manage and operate the center
• Full integration with Faction’s global remote-operations network will be maintained

This positions ARI as the European command hub for autonomous fleet supervision.

ARVIA SE: new transatlantic entity to scale urban autonomy

ARVIA SE will consolidate assets and technology contributed by the three companies, and will also benefit from Faction’s existing and upcoming U.S. commercial programs, providing immediate operational scale, real-world data, recurring revenues and established industry adoption.

Defense and military applications

Faction’s driverless and TeleAssist technologies also offer meaningful opportunities for defense and national-security use cases, including:

• Remote-operated ground vehicles for resupply missions in active conflict zones
• Autonomous delivery of critical materials without exposing personnel to danger
• Ground-based logistical capabilities comparable to autonomous drone supply systems

ARI maintains active relationships with the German Bundeswehr and Czech military and intends to present the technology through national and EU funding programs.

Urban Mobility makes Battery-equipped Peddled Bikes

German startup Urban Mobility manufactures battery-equipped peddled bikes to transport delivery loads and cargo for the logistics sector. It offers UM CargoBike, a three-wheel cargo pedelec designed for heavy loads transportation for courier express parcel (CEP) services in urban areas. O segundo protótipo do veículo português TUGA está previsto para o início de 2024, mas a fase de pré-produção das primeiras unidades comerciais não vai acontecer antes de 2025. Empresa portuguesa quer lançar serviço inovador de subscrição para passageiros que procuram uma experiência premium.

Começou por ser um veículo modelar e a ideia era que, a partir de um chassis de três rodas, seria possível transformá-lo num descapotável, num comercial de mercadorias ou num convencional motociclo. Desde que foi anunciado no início de 2022, os planos para o TUGA já se alteraram e atualmente estão previstos dois modelos, o Commuter e o desportivo descapotável Thunder.

O SAPO TEK visitou a sede da empresa em Cascais para ver o primeiro protótipo do TUGA e conhecer o cofundador da empresa César Barbosa e o CEO John Hagie, que explicaram a visão da TUGA Innovations para o futuro da mobilidade, que tem como tagline “The Speed of Time”.

“O César é o verdadeiro pai de todo o projeto, é um arquiteto que trabalhou num grande projeto urbano de mobilidade no Brasil e é um entusiasta de carros, com uma coleção de modelos clássicos”, foi assim que o CEO da empresa apresentou o mentor César Barbosa na nossa visita.

Na apresentação da equipa composta por quase 20 pessoas, John Hagie destaca a presença de António Câmara e Edmundo Nobre, cofundadores da Ydreams, pela sua grande experiência em tecnologia, que César Barbosa diz conhecer há quase 30 anos: “quer participar neste projeto? Traga os seus 30 ou 40 anos para fazemos qualquer coisa disruptiva”, reforça o cofundador da empresa no convite. E foi também em projetos anteriores que conheceu John Hagie, com uma ligação à HP, que convidou para assumir o cargo de CEO. “Tivemos apenas uma reunião de um outro projeto paralelo e recebi o convite para me juntar à TUGA”, disse John Hagie.

César Barbosa destaca a capacidade multidisciplinar do CEO da empresa como essencial para o projeto, na capacidade de colocar o seu conhecimento em funcionamento. No quadro de conselheiros constam ainda nomes como Fernando Pinto, ex-administrador da TAP, o CFO Faizaan Lalani está em Vancouver e Sultan Seborro procura financiamento para o projeto no Médio Oriente.

O líder de engenharia é Samuel Gomez, brasileiro, que vive em Espanha, nas Astúrias, que no passado trabalhou com o Rubens Barrichello na sua equipa de Formula 1, assim como para a General Motors e Volkswagon. Antes de se juntar à equipa trabalhou num projeto europeu de mobilidade elétrica. Outro membro da equipa salientado é Lucas Leonardi, que implementou um programa em Paris chamado “Freedom to Move” e especialista em “Mobility as a service”, que é uma das estratégias da empresa para entrar no mercado.

Como mudar as mentalidades na mobilidade individual?

“Este não é mais um veículo elétrico”, frisa César Barbosa. A empresa começou por projetar soluções para problemas existentes, neste caso, sobre a mobilidade. John Hagie, que vem do sector das Vendas na HP, salienta as diferenças enormes entre vender um hardware de TI e uma solução para TI. “Existe uma diferença entre as conversas que temos, sobre soluções que estamos a procurar, que são muito diferentes de alguém que diga que tem um novo e interessante veículo elétrico”. O líder da empresa diz que as pessoas precisam de produtos, mas precisam mais ainda de soluções para as suas vidas.

A sua tagline “The Speed of Time” está relacionada com as dificuldades nos transportes urbanos e “a quantidade incrível de tempo que as pessoas passam nas filas de trânsito, o tempo perdido e as questões ambientais e de saúde associados, assim como o impacto económico. E apresentamos uma solução para isso que é um veículo que tem um design único e com inspiração em motociclos, que são os únicos capazes de furar as filas de trânsito”, explica o CEO da empresa, reforçando que ambos conduzem motas de três rodas no seu dia-a-dia. Salientam que o tempo perdido em filas de trânsito poderiam ser aproveitadas para fazer muitas outras coisas, como passar mais tempo com a família.

O TUGA tem 88 centímetros, sensivelmente a largura de uma mota, capaz de furar o trânsito. Numa curiosa fotografia mostrada na apresentação, é visto que praticamente todos os automóveis parados têm apenas o condutor a bordo, o que para a empresa é um desperdício. Entre as filas passam um motociclo e claro, um TUGA.

A empresa explica que o veículo é uma parte importante da solução, embora estejam também envolvidos elementos como o software, dados e tecnologia própria. Segundo John Hagie, há uma grande preocupação em construir uma grande marca, com uma imagem forte de comunicação. Mas porquê o nome TUGA para o projeto e como este foi recebido além-fronteiras? “Lá fora é visto como um grande nome”, disse César Barbosa, acrescentando que o som da palavra é forte, “mas também porque é o selo da nacionalidade”, salientando o berço do veículo em Portugal. O fundador da empresa reforça que o TUGA não é um carro, “para isso teria de ter quatro rodas e apenas tem três”.

Um segredo confidenciado por César Barbosa ao SAPO TEK é que TUGA significa também “Transporte Urbano de Grande Autonomia”. Quando registou o nome, o Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial (INPI) não deixou registar o nome exatamente pela conotação nacional portuguesa. “Falei com os advogados, porque queria o nome TUGA para o nosso veículo, e perguntei se metesse pontos, como se fossem iniciais e assim foi permitido”. E assim nasceu a marca TUGA para o veículo português. O logotipo foi criado pelo diretor criativo de Riddley Scott Media Group, “o John Filipe, que por acaso é português”.

Elegância e sustentabilidade em serviços de mobilidade

Um dos esclarecimentos feitos durante a nossa visita é que a empresa não está interessada em explorar e competir no “mercado de massas”, onde estão os veículos Fiat Panda, um smartphone ou smartwatch de entrada de gama. E também não lhe interessa o mercado premium da BMW Series 3 ou um relógio de gama média alta. A empresa quer situar o TUGA Commuter entre os produtos Deluxe, como o Jaguar ou um Rolex, com os seus serviços. Subindo mais um andar na pirâmide situa-se o TUGA Thunder, num serviço de subscrição, ao lado de produtos da Chanel, Aston Martin ou Porsche. E na ponta da pirâmide é que entram então as vendas do TUGA, no terreno dos exclusivos, onde estão o Lamborghini Veneno, um Bugatti LA Voiture Noire ou uma Harley-Davidson Blue Edition.

Para explicar esta pirâmide, a prioridade da TUGA não é vender unidades. As vendas dos exclusivos serão para clientes que querem os seus veículos altamente personalizados. Servem sobretudo para ajudar a promover a marca, estando enquadrados no preço em torno dos 60 mil euros. O principal objetivo é que os utilizadores adiram aos serviços de mobilidade de luxo oferecidos pelo TUGA Commuter ou assinem a subscrição com o Thunder, que ainda não têm preço. O serviço de subscrição funciona como uma espécie de renting, juntamente com os upgrades que a empresa está a preparar: os utilizadores pagam uma mensalidade e têm o TUGA Thunder na sua garagem para utilizarem à vontade. Onde a empresa pretende se diferenciar é que se tiverem de se deslocar a outra cidade ou mesmo país, terem a certeza de que têm um TUGA à disposição para utilizar, sem ter de levar o “seu”. Para tal pretende licenciar um sistema de franchising e criar uma rede cada vez mais alargada na alocação dos veículos. A empresa quer incluir no serviço o sistema de valet, em que alguém vai ao encontro do cliente para lhe entregar o veículo. “É como uma espécie de clube”, na visão de César Barbosa daquilo que pretende para os seus serviços.

Serviços que a empresa chama de “Elegância sustentável”, para um público que aprecia inovação e sustentabilidade. A TUGA Innovations afirma que não existem muitos produtos do género neste segmento de luxo e é por isso que a sua imagem é muito clara. E não tem problemas em afirmar que o seu produto será caro quando chegar ao mercado. “Se queres fazer bem e fazer algo robusto, estruturado e tecnologia de topo, etc. e se o queres fazer barato, morres”, disse César Barbosa. Isso colocaria a empresa a competir com os automóveis elétricos chineses ou indianos. “É produção em série, lucros baixos e uma grande luta. É mais fácil ires para a ponte sobre o Tejo e mergulhares”, acrescenta com humor. Mesmo o seu serviço de mobilidade pretende elevar a qualidade, oferecendo uma proposta de transporte como um Uber ou Bolt, mas numa segmentação de luxo, que a empresa compara à alemã BlackLane. Um serviço de chauffeur, onde o motorista apenas transporta um passageiro atrás. Se olharmos para os veículos de TVDE a circular nas estradas, uma grande percentagem transporta apenas uma pessoa. É aqui que a TUGA pretende se diferenciar. “A Uber trabalha para as massas, nós pretendemos oferecer algo mais exclusivo”, disse César Barbosa. A comparação, ainda que pequena, que a empresa pode fazer sobre a sua visão dos serviços que propõe é o transporte de passageiros em motas nas ruas de Paris.

A empresa salientou uma conversação preliminar com a Câmara de Oeiras, município que tem procurado manter-se na vanguarda tecnológica a nível nacional. E poderá haver um programa-piloto do serviço na cidade no futuro. Não é o objetivo da TUGA Innovations estar presente nos municípios nacionais, a competir com outros sistemas de mobilidade, por não ser o seu público-alvo. “Se o mayor de Nova Iorque nos ligar, obviamente vamos lá”, diz César Barbosa. “Anteriormente enviámos uma solicitação à Câmara de Lisboa e nem recebemos resposta. Mas se virem o sistema implementado em Oeiras talvez venham a ficar interessados” reforça John Hagie.

A empresa ainda não tem preços para a oferta de subscrição ou de mobilidade definidos. John Hagie diz que vão olhar para modelos de serviços de subscrição como o da Porsche e oferecer 30% a menos que esse valor por uma oferta semelhante. Na mobilidade deverá estar dentro dos valores de um Uber Black ou BlackLane, esperando estar em paridade com esses serviços.

Software integrado com as Smart Cities

Do lado do software, a empresa oferece uma aplicação de realidade aumentada para iOS e Android, que para já ajuda na promoção do veículo e ter mais informações sobre o mesmo. Os modelos disponíveis podem ser projetados em cima de uma mesa da sala para observar as suas funcionalidades. A empresa também quer usar a aplicação como ferramenta social, desafiando os utilizadores a mostrar o TUGA na cidade e outras iniciativas.

A empresa pretende que o TUGA seja integrado nas redes de trocas de dados das Smart Cities. O veículo vai recolher dados durante a sua circulação e transmiti-las às autoridades locais, caso as desejem, nomeadamente a qualidade do ar.

“Temos uma interface de IA para o passageiro e condutor. Os nossos serviços vão ter a plataforma e a app. Se tivermos numa cidade podemos usar a app TUGA e pedir um transporte”, explica o CEO da empresa. O condutor vai ter acesso a informações sobre o trânsito, obras na estrada, condições de estacionamento, horários relativos aos sistemas de transporte, as estações de carregamento, além de informações do veículo e outros dados personalizados. Já o condutor pode aceder a informações sobre a qualidade do ar, tanto no interior do veículo como no exterior. Vai ter ainda conteúdos gerados por IA, assim como entretenimento, promoções de compras e dados personalizados. Para as empresas que tenham uma frota de veículos TUGA também terão acesso a informações que tornam mais fácil a sua gestão.

A aplicação vai também abrir diversas interações com o próprio veículo, segundo foi explicado ao SAPO TEK. Por exemplo, basta deslizar o volante para cima e baixo no cockpit virtual da app para que isso se reflita no veículo, que neste caso ajuda o condutor a sentar-se confortavelmente. Funcionalidades que já estão a ser introduzidas no segundo protótipo que está a ser finalizado.

Olhando para o futuro, não muito distante, o TUGA quer ser o companheiro da mobilidade urbana aérea. O veículo que vai estar à espera do passageiro que acabou de aterrar de um eVTOL, para o transportar rapidamente para o destino final. Graças aos conhecimentos de Fernando Pinto, a TUGA Innovation tem um acordo com a Eve Air Mobility, uma subsidiária da brasileira Embraer, para criar uma experiência aos clientes dos serviços de eVTOL.“Ninguém investe numa viagem rápida em eVTOL para depois ficar preso no trânsito até ao destino, não faz sentido”, disse John Hagie.

Inicialmente não vai oferecer condução remota, embora possa ser possível aos condutores estacionarem o veículo a partir do smartphone, a partir do exterior, como se fosse um carro telecomandado. A empresa espera implementar este sistema já no próximo protótipo. De salientar que as dimensões do TUGA respeitam os motociclos, o que significa que conseguirá estacionar cinco veículos no espaço de um automóvel convencional. O veículo é muito leve, construído em fibra de carbono, sendo possível estacioná-lo à mão como uma mota.

O objetivo da empresa foi procurar criar um veículo para alimentar uma visão de serviços de mobilidade que saia do espectro dos motociclos e automóveis já existentes no mercado.

TUGA V2 está a ser finalizado, prometendo foco na segurança e privacidade

O protótipo estacionado na sua sede em Cascais vai fazer em dezembro dois anos e foi desenhado para transportar as pessoas dos locais dormitórios para o centro das respetivas cidades. O TUGA pode ser usado em autoestrada e atinge 140 km/h. E foi criado para a utilização em qualquer idade, dos 18 aos 88 anos, refere o líder da empresa, que tenham carta de condução.

O veículo não inclina e tem um eixo traseiro retrátil, assente num chassis expansivo. E com isso promete ser estreito como uma mota, mas fechado e seguro como um carro. Tem 88 centímetros de largura e 2,45 metros de cumprimento, ligeiramente superiores a uma mota. E com a vantagem de ter espaço de carga, sistema de purificador do ar no interior, integração de drone, além de divertido de conduzir e fácil estacionar, afirma a empresa.

Olhando para o próximo protótipo, o V2, o modelo Thunder permite tirar o capot e o para-brisas para se transformar num descapotável. A empresa espera lançar o veículo inicialmente no Dubai e no Médio Oriente. De forma a segmentar a marca, foi decidido eliminar a proposta inicial das versões de transporte de carga, por não se encaixar na visão atual dos serviços. Ainda assim, não estão fechadas portas no futuro para a eventual oferta, se surgirem os investidores interessados. E se isso acontecer até poderá ser uma submarca diferente do TUGA.

O veículo não tem portas, para entrar no interior, o seu chassis abre e fecha 65 centímetros para que o passageiro e o condutor assumam os seus lugares e é uma das 19 Patentes que o TUGA Innovations registou. A cúpula do veículo inclina, semelhante ao cockpit de um avião. Um mecanismo que a César Barbosa diz que o trabalho de engenharia já está feito para o próximo protótipo. E o design pretende manter o veículo seguro com três rollbars colocadas na estrutura do TUGA. “É uma cápsula de segurança. É pequeno, mas muito seguro”.

César Barbosa refere que ainda não entrou mais rapidamente em produção para que haja maturação e afinação do projeto. “Quando se corre para a produção comete-se diversos erros, que se tenta depois corrigir, mas que não se consegue”, destaca. Explica que no Japão existe uma cultura em que “se coloca o cérebro no projeto” e dá como exemplo um hospital, que no país poderá demorar cinco anos a construir e três deles é para fazer o projeto, sendo os restantes dois para a construção. “Aqui seria um ano para o projeto e quatro anos para o construir”. Para si, é mais fácil corrigir um projeto do que uma estrutura.

Um aspeto explicado na visão da empresa diz respeito à privacidade dos clientes que escolhem o serviço de mobilidade TUGA. Apesar das dimensões reduzidas do veículo, César Barbosa afirma que passageiro e condutor estão separados por uma divisão fixa, o que confere total privacidade ao cliente, esteja a trabalhar ou a fechar um negócio ao telefone. Os próprios vidros traseiros são escurecidos, para dificultar qualquer espreitadela para o interior. A comunicação é feita através do premir de um botão, abrindo a comunicação entre as duas partes da cabine. “Até o ar que respiram é diferente, sendo possível controlar a temperatura do ar condicionado entre o condutor e passageiro”.

O veículo terá tecnologia para analisar a qualidade do ar tanto no interior do veículo, como no exterior. Isso foi possível com a parceria com uma empresa que tem experiência em purificar o ar em quartos de hospital.

A procura de oferecer um modelo disruptivo no mercado, tecnologicamente avançado, seguro e com foco na privacidade são fatores que levam a empresa a colocar o preço de veículo no estatuto de premium, bem acima dos 50 mil dólares. E apesar de comparar o preço a uma Harley Davidson de topo, César Barbosa afirma que “eles não têm nada do que estamos a oferecer”. No entanto, como referido anteriormente, a venda dos veículos será personalizada e feita à mão para os clientes dispostos a pagar o seu preço.

Não será um veículo disponível no concessionário para comprar, cada cliente irá fazer a sua versão com a empresa. Vão estar disponíveis edições especiais limitadas relativas a temas gerais. O veículo será a base do negócio de serviços que a TUGA Innovations pretende explorar, embora um cliente satisfeito com a experiência que teve, poderá dar o passo seguinte e adquirir um modelo personalizado.

De salientar que a TUGA Innovations está inserida num consórcio juntamente com duas outras empresas. A Vangest S.A na Marinha Grande, foi responsável pelo fabrico do primeiro protótipo; e a Optimal Structural Solutions, empresa situada em Alcabideche, próximo do autódromo do Estoril, cedeu o espaço para a TUGA abrir a sua sede. Esta empresa cria estruturas avançadas muito leves para veículos de luxo, Fórmula 1 e náutica e está também a desenvolver para o TUGA.

O TUGA V2 tem uma carroçaria com um design para caberem duas pessoas no interior até 1,90 m. A ergonomia foi uma das novas preocupações para este segundo modelo, uma vez que no primeiro o objetivo foi testar o conceito do veículo, validar a largura do eixo traseiro de 1,28 a 0,88 metros. “Até 0,88 metros é perfeito na agilidade do veículo, a partir daí cada centímetro passa a valer um metro”, disse o mentor do projeto. E sem agilidade não existe mobilidade.

O primeiro veículo teve diversas adaptações para estar pronto a tempo de mostrar aos investidores. A zona do posicionamento dos pés, por exemplo, recebeu diversas “gerigonças” para ajudar a cobertura a fechar. O segundo protótipo não só cresceu 17 cm face ao primeiro, como ainda viu o seu eixo traseiro encolher, com as rodas menos salientes na carroçaria. Mesmo o volante de motociclo da primeira versão foi apenas para testar, uma vez que o segundo será bem mais sofisticado.

Todo o conceito geral está presente na primeira versão do protótipo, mas falta-lhe os elementos patenteados, como a plataforma retrátil do chassis e os atuadores, que permitem esticar o veículo. E tudo isso já está pronto para o V2: “Já temos cerca de 70% das peças todas do segundo veículo, que já é muito próximo daquilo que queremos para a produção”, disse César Barbosa.

No entanto, frisa que está a seguir toda a homologação dos Estados Unidos e não da Europeia. Essa decisão prendeu-se com o estudo de mercado feito inicialmente, em que a Europa apareceu em cerca de sexto lugar (Londres) como alvo do seu produto. Os Estados Unidos, Médio Oriente, Índia, Brasil e China foram os mercados mais destacados. “Lisboa nem aparece no estudo”.

Na conclusão da apresentação, o TUGA é um veículo bem português, começando pelo seu nome, que pretende ser um embaixador tecnológico no estrangeiro, em mercados que realmente pedem inovação nos serviços de mobilidade. Não está interessado em disputar mercado com os comuns automóveis elétricos que estão cada vez mais enraizados nas estradas. E nem quer discutir com a Uber os serviços de mobilidade comum. A fasquia está elevada para uma oferta individual, personalizada, sobretudo com muito luxo. Charme não falta ao primeiro veículo, mesmo ainda longe da visão tecnológica que a equipa de César Barbosa pretende, mas o V2 que estará pronto em 2024 poderá fazer toda a diferença, se tudo o que estiver no papel for transposto para a realidade.

The second prototype of the Portuguese TUGA vehicle is scheduled for the beginning of 2024, but the pre-production phase of the first commercial units will not happen before 2025. The Portuguese company wants to launch an innovative subscription service for passengers looking for a premium experience.

It started out as a model vehicle and the idea was that, from a three-wheel chassis, it would be possible to transform it into a convertible, a commercial goods vehicle or a conventional motorcycle. Since it was announced in early 2022, plans for the TUGA have already changed and two models are currently planned, the Commuter and the sporty convertible Thunder.

SAPO TEK visited the company’s headquarters in Cascais to see the first TUGA prototype and meet the company’s co-founder César Barbosa and CEO John Hagie, who explained TUGA Innovations’ vision for the future of mobility, whose tagline is “The Speed of Time”.

“Cesar is the true father of the whole project, he is an architect who worked on a large urban mobility project in Brazil and is a car enthusiast, with a collection of classic models”, that is how the company’s CEO introduced his mentor César Barbosa on our visit.

In the presentation of the team composed of almost 20 people, John Hagie highlights the presence of António Câmara and Edmundo Nobre, co-founders of Ydreams, for their great experience in technology, which César Barbosa says he has known for almost 30 years: “Do you want to participate in this project? Bring your 30 or 40 years of experience to do something disruptive”, reinforces the company’s co-founder in the invitation. And it was also in previous projects that he met John Hagie, with a connection to HP, who he invited to assume the position of CEO. “We just had a meeting of another side project and I received the invitation to join TUGA”, said John Hagie.

César Barbosa highlights the multidisciplinary capacity of the company’s CEO as essential for the project, in the ability to put his knowledge to work. The advisory board also includes names like Fernando Pinto, former TAP administrator, CFO Faizaan Lalani is in Vancouver and Sultan Seborro is looking for funding for the project in the Middle East.

The engineering leader is Samuel Gomez, Brazilian, who lives in Spain, in Asturias, who in the past worked with Rubens Barrichello in his Formula 1 team, as well as for General Motors and Volkswagen. Before joining the team he worked on a European electric mobility project. Another highlighted team member is Lucas Leonardi, who implemented a program in Paris called “Freedom to Move” and a specialist in “Mobility as a service”, which is one of the company’s strategies to enter the market.

How to change mentalities in individual mobility?

“This is no longer an electric vehicle”, emphasizes César Barbosa. The company started by designing solutions to existing problems, in this case about mobility. John Hagie, who hails from Sales at HP, points out the huge differences between selling IT hardware and an IT solution. “There is a difference between the conversations we have, about solutions we are looking for, which are very different from someone saying they have an interesting new electric vehicle.” The company’s leader says that people need products, but they need solutions for their lives even more.

Its tagline “The Speed of Time” is related to the difficulties in urban transport and “the incredible amount of time people spend in traffic queues, the lost time and the associated environmental and health issues, as well as the economic impact . And we present a solution for that, which is a vehicle that has a unique design and is inspired by motorcycles, which are the only ones capable of cutting through traffic queues”, explains the company’s CEO, reinforcing that both drive three-wheeled motorcycles on their everyday. They point out that the time lost in traffic queues could be used to do many other things, such as spending more time with the family.

The TUGA measures 88 cm, roughly the width of a motorcycle, capable of cutting through traffic. In a curious photograph shown at the presentation, it is seen that practically all stopped cars have only the driver on board, which for the company is a waste. A motorcycle passes between the rows and, of course, a TUGA.

The company explains that the vehicle is an important part of the solution, although elements such as software, data and proprietary technology are also involved. According to John Hagie, there is great concern in building a great brand, with a strong communication image. But why the name TUGA for the project and how was it received across borders? “Out there it is seen as a big name”, said César Barbosa, adding that the sound of the word is strong, “but also because it is the seal of nationality”, highlighting the birthplace of the vehicle in Portugal. The company’s founder reinforces that the TUGA is not a car, “for that it would have to have four wheels and it only has three”.

A secret confided by César Barbosa to SAPO TEK is that TUGA also means “Urban Transport of Great Autonomy”. When the name was registered, the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) did not allow the name to be registered precisely because of the Portuguese national connotation. “I spoke with the lawyers, because I wanted the name TUGA for our vehicle, and I asked if I could put points, as if they were initials and that was allowed”. And so the TUGA brand was born for the Portuguese vehicle. The logo was created by the creative director of Ridley Scott Media Group, “John Filipe, who happens to be Portuguese”.

Elegance and sustainability in mobility services

One of the clarifications made during our visit is that the company is not interested in exploring and competing in the “mass market”, where Fiat Panda vehicles, an entry-level smartphone or smartwatch are found. And he is not interested in the premium market of the BMW Series 3 or an upper mid-range watch either. The company wants to place the TUGA Commuter among Deluxe products, such as a Jaguar or a Rolex, with its services. Going up one more floor in the pyramid is the TUGA Thunder, in a subscription service, alongside products from Chanel, Aston Martin or Porsche. And it is at the tip of the pyramid that TUGA sales enter, in the field of exclusives, where there are the Lamborghini Veneno, a Bugatti LA Voiture Noire or a Harley-Davidson Blue Edition.

To explain this pyramid, TUGA’s priority is not to sell units. Exclusive sales will be for customers who want their vehicles highly customized. They serve mainly to help promote the brand, being included in the price of around 60 thousand euros. The main objective is for users to subscribe to the luxury mobility services offered by the TUGA Commuter or subscribe to the subscription with Thunder, which still have no price. 

The subscription service works as a kind of renting, together with the upgrades that the company is preparing: users pay a monthly fee and have the TUGA Thunder in their garage to use as they wish. Where the company intends to differentiate itself is that if they have to travel to another city or even country, they can be sure that they have a TUGA available to use, without having to take “their own”. 

To this end, it intends to license a franchising system and create an increasingly wide network in the allocation of vehicles. The company wants to include a valet system in the service, in which someone goes to meet the customer to deliver the vehicle. “It’s like a kind of club”, in César Barbosa’s vision of what he wants for his services.

Services that the company calls “Sustainable Elegance”, for an audience that appreciates innovation and sustainability. TUGA Innovations claims that there are not many products of this kind in this luxury segment and that is why its image is very clear. And he has no problem saying that his product will be expensive when it hits the market. “If you want to do well and do something robust, structured and top technology, etc. and if you want to do it cheaply, you die”, said César Barbosa. That would put the company in competition with Chinese or Indian electric cars. “It’s mass production, low profits and a big fight. It’s easier to go to the bridge over the Tagus and dive in ”, he adds with humour. 

Even its mobility service intends to raise quality, offering a transport proposal like an Uber or Bolt, but in a luxury segmentation, which the company compares to the German BlackLane. A chauffeur service, where the driver only carries one passenger in the back. If we look at the TVDE vehicles circulating on the roads, a large percentage carry only one person. This is where TUGA intends to stand out. “Uber works for the masses, we intend to offer something more exclusive”, said César Barbosa. The comparison, albeit small, that the company can make about its vision of the services it proposes is the transport of passengers on motorcycles in the streets of Paris.

The company highlighted a preliminary conversation with the Chamber of Oeiras, a municipality that has sought to remain at the forefront of technology at national level. And there may be a pilot program for the service in the city in the future. It is not the objective of TUGA Innovations to be present in national municipalities, competing with other mobility systems, as this is not its target audience. “If the mayor of New York calls us, obviously we’ll go there”, says César Barbosa. “We previously sent a request to the Lisbon Chamber and did not even receive a response. But if they see the system implemented in Oeiras, they might become interested” reinforces John Hagie.

The company has not yet defined prices for the subscription or mobility offer. John Hagie says they will look at subscription service models like Porsche and offer 30% less than that for a similar offer. In mobility, it should be within the values of an Uber Black or BlackLane, hoping to be on par with these services.

Software integrated with Smart Cities

On the software side, the company offers an augmented reality application for iOS and Android, which for now helps in promoting the vehicle and having more information about it. The models available can be projected onto a table in the living room to observe their functionality. The company also wants to use the application as a social tool, challenging users to show TUGA in the city and other initiatives.

The company intends for TUGA to be integrated into the Smart Cities data exchange networks. The vehicle will collect data during its circulation and transmit it to the local authorities, if they so wish, namely the air quality.

“We have an AI interface for the passenger and the driver. Our services will have the platform and the app. If we are in a city, we can use the TUGA app and ask for transport”, explains the company’s CEO. The driver will have access to information about traffic, road works, parking conditions, timetables relating to transport systems, charging stations, as well as vehicle information and other personalized data. The driver can access information about air quality, both inside the vehicle and outside. There will also be AI-generated content, as well as entertainment, shopping promotions and personalized data. Companies that have a fleet of TUGA vehicles will also have access to information that makes their management easier.

The application will also open several interactions with the vehicle itself, as explained to SAPO TEK. For example, simply slide the steering wheel up and down in the app’s virtual cockpit for this to be reflected in the vehicle, which in this case helps the driver to sit comfortably. Functionalities that are already being introduced in the second prototype that is being finalized.

Looking to the not-too-distant future, TUGA wants to be the companion of urban air mobility. The vehicle that will be waiting for the passenger who has just landed from an eVTOL, to quickly transport him to his final destination. Thanks to the expertise of Fernando Pinto, TUGA Innovation has an agreement with Eve Air Mobility, a subsidiary of the Brazilian Embraer, to create an experience for customers of eVTOL services. “No one invests in a quick trip in eVTOL and then gets stuck in traffic to the destination, it makes no sense,” said John Hagie.

Initially it will not offer remote driving, although it may be possible for drivers to park the vehicle from the smartphone, from the outside, as if it were a remote controlled car. The company hopes to implement this system in the next prototype. It should be noted that the dimensions of the TUGA respect motorcycles, which means that it will be able to park five vehicles in the space of a conventional car. The vehicle is very light, built in carbon fiber, and can be parked by hand like a motorcycle.

The company’s objective was to seek to create a vehicle to feed a vision of mobility services that went beyond the spectrum of motorcycles and cars already on the market.

TUGA V2 is being finalized, promising focus on security and privacy

The prototype parked at its headquarters in Cascais will be two years old in December and was designed to transport people from sleeping quarters to the center of the respective cities. The TUGA can be used on the highway and reaches 140 km/h. And it was created for use at any age, from 18 to 88 years old, says the company’s leader, who have a driving license.

The vehicle does not tilt and has a retractable rear axle, resting on an expansive chassis. And with that it promises to be narrow like a motorcycle, but closed and safe like a car. It is 88 centimeters wide and 2.45 meters long, slightly larger than a motorcycle. And with the advantage of having cargo space, an interior air purifier system, drone integration, as well as being fun to drive and easy to park, the company claims.

Looking at the next prototype, the V2, the Thunder model allows you to remove the hood and windshield to transform it into a convertible. The company hopes to launch the vehicle initially in Dubai and the Middle East. In order to segment the brand, it was decided to eliminate the initial proposal for cargo transport versions, as it did not fit the current vision of services. Even so, doors are not closed in the future for an eventual offer, if interested investors appear. And if that happens, it could even be a sub-brand different from TUGA.

The vehicle has no doors, to get inside, its chassis opens and closes 65 centimeters so that the passenger and the driver can take their seats and it is one of the 19 Patents that TUGA Innovations has registered. The vehicle’s dome tilts, similar to an airplane cockpit. A mechanism that César Barbosa says the engineering work is already done for the next prototype. And the design intends to keep the vehicle safe with three rollbars placed on the TUGA structure. “It’s a safety capsule. It’s small, but very safe.”

César Barbosa mentions that it has not yet gone into production more quickly so that the project can mature and be fine-tuned. “When you run into production, you make several mistakes, which you then try to correct, but you can’t”, he points out. He explains that in Japan there is a culture in which “the brain is put into the project” and gives the example of a hospital, which in the country may take five years to build and three of them are to do the project, with the remaining two for construction. “Here it would be one year for the project and four years to build it”. For you, it is easier to correct a project than a structure.

One aspect explained in the company’s vision concerns the privacy of customers who choose the TUGA mobility service. Despite the reduced dimensions of the vehicle, César Barbosa says that passenger and driver are separated by a fixed division, which gives total privacy to the customer, whether he is working or closing a deal on the phone. The rear windows themselves are tinted to make it difficult to peek into the interior. Communication is done by pressing a button, opening communication between the two parts of the cabin. “Even the air they breathe is different, making it possible to control the temperature of the air conditioning between the driver and passenger”.

The vehicle will have technology to analyze the air quality both inside the vehicle and outside. This was made possible by partnering with a company that has experience in purifying the air in hospital rooms.

The search to offer a disruptive model in the market, technologically advanced, safe and with a focus on privacy are factors that lead the company to put the price of the vehicle in premium status, well above 50 thousand dollars. And despite comparing the price to a top-of-the-line Harley Davidson, César Barbosa claims that “they don’t have anything we’re offering”. However, as previously mentioned, the sale of vehicles will be personalized and handmade for customers willing to pay the price.

It will not be a vehicle available at the dealership to buy, each customer will make their version with the company. Limited special editions covering general themes will be available. The vehicle will be the basis of the service business that TUGA Innovations intends to explore, although a customer who is satisfied with the experience he has had can take the next step and purchase a personalized model.

It should be noted that TUGA Innovations is part of a consortium together with two other companies. Vangest S.A in Marinha Grande was responsible for manufacturing the first prototype; and Optimal Structural Solutions, a company located in Alcabideche, close to the Estoril race track, provided space for TUGA to open its headquarters. This company creates very light advanced structures for luxury vehicles, Formula 1 and nautical and is also developing for TUGA.

The TUGA V2 has a body designed to fit two people up to 1.90 m inside. Ergonomics was one of the new concerns for this second model, since in the first the objective was to test the vehicle’s concept, validating the width of the rear axle from 1.28 to 0.88 meters. “Up to 0.88 meters is perfect for the vehicle’s agility, from then on each centimeter becomes one meter”, said the project’s mentor. And without agility there is no mobility.

The first vehicle had several adaptations to be ready in time to show investors. The foot positioning area, for example, received several “contraptions” to help the roof close. The second prototype not only grew 17 cm compared to the first, but also saw its rear axle shrink, with the wheels less protruding from the bodywork. Even the motorcycle steering wheel of the first version was just for testing, since the second one will be much more sophisticated.

The whole general concept is present in the first version of the prototype, but it lacks the patented elements, such as the retractable chassis platform and the actuators, which allow the vehicle to be stretched. And all of this is already ready for the V2: “We already have about 70% of all the parts for the second vehicle, which is already very close to what we want for production”, said César Barbosa. The warrants will be repriced from $0.25 and $1.00 to $0.09.  All other terms of the warrants will remain unchanged other than as set out below.

The Company intends to seek approval from the warrant holders to reprice the warrants to $0.09.  Repricing of the warrants requires the approval of all warrant holders.  Subject to obtaining such approval, pursuant to the policies of the CSE, the expiry date of the warrants will remain the same, provided that if, following the amendment to the exercise price, for any 10 consecutive trading days the closing price of the Company’s listed shares exceeds $0.1125, the term of the warrants will be accelerated to a 30 day exercise period (the “Accelerated Exercise Period”). The TUGA urban mobility solution is being designed to offer an optional suite of advanced digital communications and navigation aids and is no wider than a motorcycle for agility offering a patent-pending expanding rear axle for high-speed stability.
